It isn’t often that we write about a consumer case, it’s usually a case involving insurance claims or a case we were hired on to assist with a law firm. But this one was special, and is worth sharing.
A woman came to us asking if we can conduct an electronic sweep on her car. She suspects someone is tracking where she is going, as comments were made by people she knows. She decided to get to the truth and have her car swept for tracking devices.
The Electronic Sweep Begins
The car was brought to our facility and we began to conduct the tedious electronic sweep to her car searching for cellular data devices and/or devices that are magnetized to the vehicle. After a 2 hour of searching with our GPS tracking equipment, we received a response indicating there was a tracking device nearby.
As we began to dig deeper into the car, we found there was potentially a device. The device was located in a particular area of the vehicle where special tools were required in order to get at the GPS tracking device. We informed the client. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do, so she waited until after the weekend to return. She would like to have the device removed.
The Device Mysteriously Moved
The car came back to our facility and we’re ready to remove the device. However, the location of the car where the device was responding to our GPS equipment is no longer in place. We became suspicious and started to sweep the car again. This time we found a response coming from the glovebox. Interesting. It moved to a new location.
We removed the glovebox and evaluated the various wiring systems. We identified a device that ‘looks’ like a tracking device. We wrote down the serial number and began a search. We verified that this was a tracking device and photographed it as evidence. We discovered that the GPS tracking device was sophisticated in its purchase and installation as it was wired to a power source within the vehicle. Now it always had power.
Result
We informed the client of the sophisticated nature of the install and she knew right away who it was. Concerned family members wanted to be sure she was safe from harm as she was going through a difficult divorce which involved a child.
Although she appreciated their concern, she ultimately decided for us to stop the signal by wrapping aluminum foil around the device once the electronic sweep was complete.
