When it comes to auto accidents, speeding accident investigations are, unfortunately, extremely common. Reckless driving and speeding are an all too common daily occurrence in the Chicago and Chicagoland area. We are sure you know, especially if you’ve been driving through the city. Cars swerve recklessly in and out, oftentimes driving on the side of the highway just to pass a vehicle. In 2023, 70% of traffic fatalities in Chicago involved speeding drivers. Nearly 90% of Chicago fatal accidents involve reckless driving. Data analysis shows that people drive at speeds above 50 mph at all times of the day and night throughout all Chicago neighborhoods. It’s no wonder RGH Investigations get many speeding accident investigation requests. This month’s case involves a speeding accident investigation where RGH Investigations used witness investigation, reconstruction, and photography to determine what happened in the accident, who was involved, and who to sue.
Two In a Row!
In this month’s case, RGH Investigations were called to investigate the scene of not one, but two sequent accidents. The first accident involved a semi-truck on the highway. Roads were blocked off by authorities while a flatbed truck was loading a disabled vehicle to the back of it. The driver of the damaged vehicle was sitting in the cab of the flatbed truck.
As authorities directed traffic to keep the area clear, a moving semi-truck was merging into one lane to safely bypass the accident. Meanwhile, a reckless driver was swerving in and out of traffic, quickly coming to the scene of the flatbed and damaged car. You can guess what happened next. The semi-truck swerved to make way for the speeding car in order to attempt to avoid the accident, but instead, crashed into the car at the scene. At the same time, the speeding car was pushed into the scene of the accident, making its way up the flatbed of the truck and went airborne! It could have been a scene taken from the Fast & Furious. The speeding car on its way to being airborne hits the cab of the flatbed truck and due to the impact, removes the cab completely! The scary part is that the driver of the first accident was still in the cab! You would think with the person remaining in the car was safe. Not with this speeding car.
Who Was the Driver…?
RGH Investigations were called to do a speeding accident investigation. At first, no one knew what happened. We began the accident investigation by interviewing witnesses to get an idea of what happened, gather as many facts and details about the incident as possible. After reconstructing the scene of the accident, we then submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, in which an agency responded to us with footage from a camera that caught the entire accident. A Freedom of Information Act Request is a written statement that asks for records in possession of public agencies. Once we viewed and analyzed the video, we shared it with our client and determined who exactly we needed to find. We quickly tracked down the owner of the vehicle, decided what would be the best course of action to serve papers and executed with caution. To maintain the integrity of the evidence, our investigation team sent preservation letters to various sources so other evidence, such as videos from dashcams, would remain intact.
