Surveillance is a critical tool for private investigators, but it comes with its own set of challenges depending on the environment. Whether in a busy city or a remote rural area, private investigators need to adapt their techniques to remain undetected while gathering crucial evidence. At RGH Investigations, we specialize in both urban and remote surveillance, utilizing innovative methods to uncover the truth. Two recent cases highlight the distinct approaches required for different settings.
Following a Civil Servant to Another State
Remote surveillance is often more difficult than it sounds. Imagine trying to follow someone in an open field—without the cover of buildings, traffic, or crowds, it’s easy to be spotted. Our team was hired to investigate a civil servant on Worker’s Compensation, a common request from employers and insurance companies. What made this case unique, however, was the location: a small, rural town where blending in was particularly challenging.
The individual in question had movement restrictions and was required to attend physical therapy. Through our initial investigation, we discovered they had recently purchased property in the neighboring state, a sparsely populated area with few homes. Every day, they traveled between their home and the new property, and our job was to monitor their activities to determine whether their reported injuries were accurate. Through strategic surveillance, we obtained video evidence showing the individual moving freely—contradicting the claims made on their Worker’s Compensation report.
Urban Surveillance
Urban environments present their own unique surveillance challenges. While it’s easier to blend in with the crowd, there are also more eyes watching, making it essential for investigators to remain discreet. In another case, we were tasked with monitoring an individual who had been on Worker’s Compensation for nearly a year and was seeking an extension due to reported lack of progress in recovery. The employer wanted verification of the individual’s true condition before approving further compensation.
Over the course of a week, our team observed the subject’s daily routine. Despite claims of difficulty performing basic movements and an inability to drive, our surveillance quickly revealed otherwise. The individual was seen driving regularly, grocery shopping, and carrying bags without any apparent struggle. By blending into the urban setting—posing as fellow shoppers and discreetly positioning vehicles—we were able to document clear evidence of physical capability. However, urban surveillance is not without risk, as increased foot traffic and bystanders can sometimes raise suspicion about an investigator’s presence.
Overall…
Both urban and remote surveillance comes with their own set of advantages and challenges. In remote settings, the lack of cover makes it difficult to remain undetected, requiring creative approaches to observation. In urban environments, while blending in is easier, heightened awareness from the public can make covert surveillance more complicated. At RGH Investigations, we leverage our expertise to adapt to any situation, ensuring that we uncover the truth while maintaining discretion. Whether in a rural town or a busy city, effective surveillance is key to delivering accurate and reliable results.
