It’s easy to taste a grape from the bunches at the grocery store and get away with it, but how about $150,000 worth of produce? RGH launched a forensic investigation, and finally found the culprit…who quickly admitted.
Where’s the produce?
We got a call from a Chicago grocery store chain who reported invoices from distributors whose product they never received. Confused, the grocery store contacted the distributor, trying to dispute. The distributor confirmed the invoices were correct, and the product was delivered.
Digging Through Distributors
We decided to open a background investigation to start. Each grocery store chain has a buyer at the Waterstreet Market, so we interviewed all the distributors, one by one. We found out from one of the distributors about a buyer who was loading purchased produce by the grocery store onto the wrong truck.
Diving Deeper
The missing produce and mystery truck was not adding up, so we opened a forensic investigation. We conducted a series of employee interviews. We spoke with an assistant, who stated that the produce shouldn’t have been loaded onto that truck. The assistant thought someone was doing it for some extra pocket cash.
Mansions and Cadillacs
We had a suspect: the assistant’s head. It was quickly starting to make sense, and we warned the assistant’s head of our knowledge of his actions. Our forensic investigation ended once he admitted to the crime. He admitted to loading the produce onto the incorrect truck and selling it to other stores for a cheaper price. With this extra money, he had bought a new home and a Cadillac.
